Elizabeth Crinnigan

Obituary of Bernard Crinnigan
Born March 17, 1812 Died August 29, 1908
Word was recieved in town last Saturday morning August 29 that the venerable and aged Bernard Crinnigan had passed to his last reward, at the home of his daughter, Mrs James Beeson, residing west of town, at 7 A.M. of late he had been failing quite rapidly, being subject to sinking spells due to the weakness of his years, but he never had a disease, or ailment and his death was the results of anemia or the cause incident to old age.
Bernard Crinnigan was born in Irland March 17, 1812 consquentially he had reached the age of 96 years, 5 months and 12 days. He came to this country when a young man and became identified with the Merchant Marines. He was a vetern of the Mexican war, having seen service as a Marine on the battleship “Columbus”. One of its duties having been to take the American Minister, and return him from China in those troublesome times. He afterwards became engaged in Steam boating on the Mississippi river and was in the civil war under Admiral Farragut. Mr Crinnigan was a man of more than ordinary talents, and his long and active life, was crowded with varied experiences made him the center of intrest wherever he went. His genial good nature and honesty of purpose, coupled with many other virtues made him universally liked. Two years ago his eye sight began to fail and he became totally blind, but never lost interest in anything and he died as he lived faithful communicant of the Catholic Church and had the benefits of last rites. The funeral occurred Monday morning, Aug, 31, from the Beeson home and the remains were brought to Delmont for shipment to Bayard, Iowa where several of his children reside and were his remains ere laid to rest pease to his ashes.

This obituary was taken from the Delmont, SD record, weekley newspaper, sent to Anna Marie Couron Martin by Mrs Marsh, a long time friend of the Beeson family. Mrs Marsh added, "I remember him telling that he had been around the world seven times in his Army career". He had four daughters, Kate, Molly, Maggie, and Elizabeth, who became Mrs. James Beeson

Since the census records from after he married Mary in 1847 mostly say Absalom was born in North Carolina, I did look a bit for Beasons or Beesons in the 1840 US Census. For starters, there was an A. (I think) Beeson in Muscatine county, Iowa territory, in a household consisting of two men ages 20-30, one woman 20-30, and one woman 15-20. In Stokes county, North Carolina, there are lots of Beesons. In the Deep River district there are an older Absalom Beeson on the same page with a William Beeson two lines below; in the Salem district there is a younger Absalom Beeson (maybe Jr.?) age 20-30, with one woman age 20-30 and two girls under 5. That could be our Absalom: the oldest girl Sarah in his and Mary Ann's household in 1850 and subsequent censuses seems to be too old to be a child of their marriage, so we're speculating she may have been his daughter from a prior marriage - though the 1850 US census and 1856 Iowa census both say Sarah was born in Iowa.
